ORDER ILIZAROV CIRCULAR FIXATION SYSTEM
The Ilizarov apparatus
is a remarkable orthopedic surgical technique designed to address various bone-related issues. Developed by Dr. Gavriil Abramovich Ilizarov, this system is used for several purposes:
Lengthening and Deformity Correction of Bones:
The Ilizarov apparatus is employed to lengthen or reshape damaged bones in the arms or legs. It’s particularly useful for treating complex fractures, open bone fractures, and infected non-unions that cannot be resolved through surgery.
Extremity Saving Technique:
When faced with unhealed broken limbs, the Ilizarov system provides a limb-sparing surgical remedy. It allows for the treatment of osteopathic non-unions, promoting bone healing and regeneration.
Distraction Osteogenesis:
Dr. Ilizarov discovered the phenomenon of distraction osteogenesis while experimenting with the adjustable-rod frame of his external-fixation apparatus. By lengthening the frame, he observed the formation of fibrocartilage callus around the bone fracture site, leading to bone regeneration.
Mechanics of the Apparatus:
The Ilizarov apparatus consists of aluminium rings that are fixed to healthy bone using Kirschner wires and pins. Additional rings and threaded rods are attached with adjustable nuts to immobilize the damaged extremity. This circular construction allows controlled tension mechanics, which facilitates distraction osteogenesis and early weight-bearing during treatment.
Applications:
The Ilizarov Circular Fixation System can:
Correct angular deformities in legs.
Address leg length discrepancies.
Resolve osteopathic non-unions.
Treat structural defects in long bones by transporting bone segments and promoting regeneration.
